How to protect yourself from the flu (pig, bird or otherwise)

With pandemic of the century pretty much died down now, and people moving on from the fear that the mainstream media has provided, you may just want to tuck this away for next fall during the start of the next flu season.  This is pretty off topic now that we know that hundreds of thousands of people will not die from this “pandemic”, however, I promised in my last blog/topic of the week, to write about how to prevent and heal from the flu.  At the end of this piece, I will have information on how chiropractic helps people with the flu, and how during the 1918 flu pandemic, chiropractors saved thousands of people.


Get lots of sun (or go to the tanning booths). Our bodies need sunlight to create vitamin D. Our lack of Vitamin D, causes us to be vulnerable to infections. The flu season occurs right when we are getting our least amount of sunlight on our skins. With the lack of sun or if you have darker skin, you may want to supplement with a good vitamin D supplement.

Eat whole foods and avoid sugar. Sugar and processed foods depress the immune system. Let me know if you crave sugar.

Make sure you have enough iodine. Iodine deficiency will make us vulnerable to infection, and cause a sluggish metabolism as well as lower our body temperature. When our body temperature is lower than 98.6 degrees, our bodies can not produce essential chemical reactions efficiently. We become more vulnerable to many diseases process during that time.  I do a simple skin test to see if you are low on iodine.

Exercise raises the body temperature (if it is low) and keeps the lymphatic system and blood circulating. This allows us to push through toxins and help fight disease.

Get rest. When we lack sleep we don’t function well. This applies to our immune system.

Drink enough water. We are walking bags of water and most of us are dehydrated. If you find that the water goes right through you take a pinch of sea salt. If that does not help, talk to me.

Get your atlas in place and make sure that your nervous system is working properly. When our atlas shifts, tilts or twists out of alignment it will irritate the spinal cord, keeping our nervous system from functioning
properly. This will not only weaken many posture muscles and cause a deep twist in the spine, but also choke off signals to our organs.  Research has shown that the upper cervical adjustment will improve immune function.

Interestingly, during the 1918 flu pandemic where over a half a million people died in the U.S., chiropractors went door to door to help the sick. People who got adjusted were much less likely to die. In Iowa, medical doctors were losing one in every 15 people to the flu, while chiropractors had one in 789 die.  In Oklahoma, there were 233 cases that medical doctors had given up on and were expected to die. Chiropractors came in and adjusted them and saved all but 25. The success of chiropractic during the pandemic was a key factor in the survival of this new profession. Finally, remember it is OK to get sick. When we get sick or get the flu, our bodies clean out toxins and help prevent more debilitating disease.
