This weeks Topic of The Week.
One of the things that I like about Thorne vitamins is that they are truly
hypoallergenic vitamins. They worry about what they oil their machinery with and what fillers that they put into their capsules. They really do a great job.
I have noticed that while their Vitamin C tests beneficial significantly more often than other companies’ Vitamin C, it rarely tests beneficial. There is so much literature saying that Vitamin C is good for you, yet it only shows beneficial through muscle testing for less than a quarter of my patients at one time. This includes Vitamin C with the co-factors (bioflavonoids) and buffered Vitamin C. Even among people with the cold or flu, Vitamin D will test more often than Vitamin C.
A couple of months ago Dr. Dan Kaser, mentioned that he was on a new Vitamin C supplement and he felt that it was helping him significantly. I got some in and started to test it on patients and over 80% tested for it as beneficial. The product is from Liv-On Laboratories. The product is Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C. The water-soluble Vitamin C is encapsulated in phosphatidylcholine so that it can get absorbed easier and delivered to the liver. It is 8x as effective as getting Vitamin C into the bloodstream. While it excels at giving the traditional benefits of Vitamin C, it also is good for nervous system problems.
Another Vitamin C product that I’ve been using lately is Camu Supreme. Camu is a South American berry with one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C. It also has a high concentration of other anti-oxidants including anthocyanins, d-limonene, and catechin. Camu also contains minerals like iron, calcium, and phosphorus, as well as B Vitamins, and the amino acids valine, leucine, and serine. Supreme Nutrition Products is marketing it more as a superfood than a supplement. You can read more about it here.
Finally, I am starting to carry Cataplex C again from Standard Process. This is a whole-food supplement of vitamin C with all of its co-factors in a natural form. It is an effective and economical form of Vitamin C. It contains Camu as well as a small amount of immune-supportive nutrients like Reishi and Echinacea. It has animal products in it and is not ok for strict vegetarians.
Vitamin C is helpful for colds and the flu and other immune system problems, allergies (it reduces histamine), connective tissue (like cuts, sunburn, weak or injured ligaments and tendons, and broken bones) preventing cancer (and helping a person with it fight it). It is an antioxidant, preventing cataracts and preventing plaque formation in your arteries. Additionally, it lowers blood pressure and can prevent heart disease and stroke. Vitamin C is also helpful in periodontal disease, detoxification, diabetes, Parkinson’s as well as many other conditions. This is a good article on why Vitamin C is good for you.
I believe that these three products deliver the promise of Vitamin C better than the products that I have been using and significantly better than the Vitamin C you can get at a regular health food store or drug store.
