A tool for Computer Related Insomnia

This weeks Topic of the Week.

One of the stressors that will cause us to go out of alignment is lack of sleep. One thing that will keep people up at night is working on the computer. I’ve talked about this problem before with computers and television. Computers and TVs produce lots of blue light. Blue light is associated with daylight and while watching TV late at night can increase our exposure to blue light, sitting in front of a computer screen is much worse.  Blue light keeps our body from producing melatonin, which is the chemical that makes us sleepy. It is also an important antioxidant and immune system booster. When we are exposed to excessive blue light, we don’t produce melatonin, we don’t sleep well, and our immune system is compromised.

Color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K). Blue/white light is considered a cool color, but a hot temperature. Color over 5,000K is considered a blue/white light, while warmer, more yellow colors are in the 2,700K to 3,000K range. Daylight has a temperature of 6,500K, while computer monitors will range between 6,500K to 9,300K.

So working on the computer late at night is like looking at the sun.  In an ideal world we wouldn’t use the computer for 2 hours before we go to bed. Unfortunately, that is not always possible.

F.lux is a free software program that will (in essence) filter out the blue light on your computer screen automatically at night.  It makes it rosey and more yellow and will also prevent eye strain.  It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

If you install it at night, the difference can take getting used to. I was fine with it after a few days. Some suggestion with the settings:

1. Set the nighttime settings for around 3800K at first, after a week max it to 3400K.
2. Put in your zip code to get a more accurate setting change.
3. If you have a newer computer or one with lots of memory, change the transition speed to 60 minutes. The transition takes a lot of system resources, so if you have a slower/older computer, you may want to keep it at 20 seconds.

Dr. Michael

TV, Computers, and Sleep

I wrote this as a Topic of the Week several years ago, and just realized I never posted it online. So here it is, a little late:

On June 22, 2010, I saw an article in the Plain Dealer that helped explain why computers and TV late at night keeps people up.  For years I’ve known that the light will decrease melatonin production which in turn causes difficulty sleeping. Since lack of sleep is one of the major stressors that causes us to lose our alignment, I’ve recommended avoiding computers, TV, and bright lights before bed. Interestingly, this article claims that it is only the blue spectrum of the light that depresses melatonin.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland the darker it gets outside. It chemically tells our bodies to wind down and go to sleep. The more (blue) light we are exposed to will keep melatonin from being produced and will make it more difficult for us to wind down.  This has become a systemic problem with the advent of electronics and bright lights.

The article talks about a local company called Photonic Developments with an innovative solution to this problem.  They have eye glasses that will block out the blue light spectrum. In addition, they sell bulbs (which look like bug lights) that also don’t produce the blue light. (On the GE website, they state that the reason that bug bulbs work, is that flying insects can only see the blue and ultraviolet lights.)

Using the glasses two hours before bedtime, allows the body to produce the melatonin it needs to wind down and go to sleep. While I think that avoiding TV and computers would be the ideal, sometimes it’s hard to do so. This may be another alternative.

Here is the original article, here is Photonic Developments website.  And speaking of staying and watching TV, here is something that I saw many years ago. I wonder if these would work?

Rosemary Supreme 20% Off for the month of May

Rosemary Supreme was developed by Drs. Michael Lebowitz and Walter Schmitt. Michael Lebowitz states that it took a while for Supreme Nutrition Products to find a source of rosemary that tested (via AK) and performed well in trials.

Rosemary Supreme is a potent antioxidant. Rosemary has several anti-oxidant compounds in it. Anti-oxidants protect against free radicals. Free radicals are implicated in ageing, and cancer production. Free radicals protect against them.

Rosemary Supreme is anti-inflammatory via several pathways including preventing leukotrienes, reducing allergies, and preventing cytokines. It also helps get people off of pain pills especially NSAIDs (aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, etc.).

Lebowitz and Schmitt are also using it to help against auto-immune diseases, such as Chrohn’s, Celiac, Multiple Sclerosis,  Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rosemary also works well against estrogen and estrogen mimickers (such as parabens), that are common cancer causing agents. Unlike cruciferous based products, Rosemary Supreme doesn’t depress the thyroid. I’ve written a lot about parabens, Bisphenol A, and other chemicals that mimic sex hormones. These chemicals wreck havoc on the low back and contributes to low back instability. However, long term exposure will increase breast cancer. While we need to minimize our exposure to these chemicals, Rosemary Supreme will also protect against them.

Rosemary stimulates muscle growth and reduces atrophy. It also protects the heart, and nervous system.

Product of the Month: All Probiotics 20% off

There are millions of organisms that live on our skin, in our mouths, small intestines, and large intestines. These bacteria help each of these organs function better by protecting against infection, creating vitamins, and digesting food. The use and overuse of antibiotics in oral, venous, and topical forms (including soaps) kill off these beneficial organisms and allow other bacteria and yeasts to take hold. We can get some of the beneficial bacteria from certain fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchee (Korean sauerkraut), and brined pickles. Sometimes it’s easier to use supplements. For the month of April, all probiotics are 20% off. (please note, some are in short supply and may need to be special ordered.)  These include:

Bacillus Coagulans (formally known as Lactobacillus Sporogenes) from Thorne: I use this product the most and will often start with a bottle of this for patients. If they need more probiotics after a month, I will switch to another at that point in time. Michael Lebowitz wrote in “Clinical Indications for Thorne Research Products“:

Lactobacillus sporogenes is a spore forming probiotic used in Japan for over twenty years. Lactobacillus Sporogenes has these advantages over Lactobacillus acidophilus: 1) it survives manufacturing, shipping, and storage with no loss of viable organisms and does not require refrigeration; 2) it survives stomach acid and reaches the small intestine with no loss of viable organisms; 3) it produces L(+) lactic acid which is fully metabolized to glycogen, whereas lactobacillus acidophilus produces L(-) lactic acid which is metabolized slowly and has the potential to lead to metabolic acidosis.

Pro-Flora Concentrate: These are probiotic pearls especially designed to pass through the stomach to get tot the intestines. It is a combination product of different Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium.

Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics 12 Plus (professional formula): This product is made from fermenting fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and seaweed for five years and delivers a wide range of probiotic bacteria.

Lactopriv/B: A lactose free, vegetarian, probiotic vitamin powder with several Bifidobacterium.

FloraMend Prime Probiotic from Thorne. This is a new product. It is a heat stable proprietary blend of bacteria that are human derived and will survive the stomach acid. It is lactose, allergen, and excipient free. To read more click here.

Also on sale:

Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotic Kampu Beauty Bar: Instead of an antibiotic soap consider a probiotic beauty bar that supports rather than destroys the natural skin flora.

Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotic Magoroku skin lotion: This is a great topical for rashes, infections, and other skin problems. It is very effective and replenishing beneficial bacteria to the skin. Unfortunately, this is not a vegetarian product.

F.O.S. powder: This is a natural pre-biotic. Fructooligosaccharides are special carbohydrates that probiotic bacteria digest. It is half as sweet as sucrose, but is not absorbed, so it is used as a sweetener substitute in other countries. It is naturally found in Jerusalem artichokes, sunchokes, chickory, jicama, and bananas. Warning: using too much, too quickly can cause abdominal gas and discomfort.

“Having At Least Three Elegant Solutions To Every Problem.”

This week’s topic of the week.

“There should be three solutions to every problem.”

One of my teachers in massage school would say this. Katrin is a practitioner of the work developed by Moshe Feldenkrais. I always attributed the quote to him, and it has always sparked my imagination. Katrin said it in the context of movement as body workers, so that we would always be thinking of different ways to perform our techniques so that we wouldn’t injure ourselves. If we have (at least) three choices at all times, we would never be locked into being able to do something only one way.

I keep coming back to that quote in my more than twenty years in the healing arts, and recently I’ve come to realize that it is a core belief of my philosophy. I am constantly trying to find several ways to address a particular problem with people, be it disc herniations, muscle problems,  headaches, nutrition or adjusting the spine.

At first it was a way to address similar problems with different clients. (I need to use light and gentle techniques with my 93 year old grandmother. With an athlete I may need to use a firmer pressure). Now I am looking on three ways to address a problem with each patient. It’s liberating not to be stuck one mode of thinking. To be truthful, I don’t yet have have three elegant answers for every problem, and sometimes I’m lucky to have just one. As I grow and mature as a holistic practitioner, it’s nice to have more than when I started in practice. (There is a reason that we call this practice.)

As I kept coming back to the original concept, I started to add “elegant” to the phrase, because that is what I want: elegant solutions, not clumsy or band-aid solutions. I’m not there yet, but I am creating the possibility. My next step is apply this idea to other aspects of my life.

Yours in health,

Dr. Michael

Skin Deep: The Cosmetics Database

I just realized that I didn’t have a link to the Cosmetics Database on my website. I had one before it crashed last summer. I have it fixed now. The Cosmetics Database is an excellent resource to understanding the dangers of many chemicals that are found in lotions, soap, shampoos, and other cosmetics. It’s corrected now and is located under “Other Health Sites”

What are you listening to?

Kathi and I are often asked about the diverse collection of music that we play here. My taste in music is eclectic and comes from listing to the radio. One of the great things about living in Cleveland is the variety of music that can be heard on the left hand of the dial. While I will listen to NPR on occasion, what I really love are some of the shows on the college radio stations. As a teenager, these stations exposed me to whole new genres of music. I decided to share some of my favorite shows. Making this list, I’ve found that most of these shows are on WRUW (CASE Western Reserve’s station at 91.1 FM), but I spend almost as much time listening to WCSB (Cleveland State at 89.3 FM) and WJCU (John Carrol University at 88.7 FM). While all of the shows can be listened to online, WRUW has archived shows of the past week available. Here are some of my favorite shows and when you can listen to them:

Defend Cleveland: Monday mornings has the best sports radio show in Cleveland. Listen for great local sports analysis by Mike James.  Mondays 9-11:30am on 91.1 FM WRUW. You can download last Mondays show here. Mike James also has articles written on his website: http://www.defendclevelandshow.com

Museum Without Walls: Monday evenings 7-9pm on WRUW 91.1 FM. Colleen will sometimes features one artist during each show and will play both tracks by that artist as well as covers.  You can download last Mondays show here.

alt.country: The best country music show around: Tuesday mornings on WRUW 91.1 FM. Last Tuesdays show can be found here.

Monster Boogie: I’m a big fan of ska. Monster Boogie Joe plays ska, calypso, rock steady and reggae. But first he starts his show show with a set of garage, punk, and rock and roll. Unfortunately no downloads, you need to tune in on Tuesday nights from 9-11pm on WCSB 89.3FM.

Latin Perspectives: When you want your Cuban fix. Thursdays WRUW 91.1 FM 10am-12pm.  Download.

Forté: I’m not a big fan of metal, but I love this show. Mike D intersplices interviews with bands while showcasing their work. It’s interesting, informative, and really enjoyable. Download here.

stonecoldbikini:  Newer rock and pop with Christine. I used to listen to her on Tuesdays driving into work, but now she is on Saturdays 9-11am on WRUW, 91.1. Listen here.

Erie Effusion:  Relive the 80′s with djbg on WRUW 91.1 FM. Sundays 6-8pm. Download here.

On the One:  Franklin and Charles showcase great classic and modern funk. Download here. Sundays 8-10pm on WRUW, 91.1FM.

This is just a smattering of the many shows that are found on college radio. There are also great blues, jazz, bluegrass, polka, punk, reggae, hip-hop and other shows on. Check out their schedules or just check in when you’re driving and listen to what is playing.

Product of the Month: Co-Enzyme Q-10 and Ubiquinol

CoQ10 is an essential nutrient and antioxidant needed for the electron transport chain. The electron transport chain and Kreb’s cycle is our bodies biochemical process to make energy (in the form of the molecule ATP). CoQ10 increases energy production (gives us more energy) and allows our cells to function better.

It is needed for proper heart function,  and low levels are linked to type 2 diabetes, and liver diseases.

Cholesterol medications block Co-Q-10 function.

Ubiquinol is the converted form of C0-enzyme Q-10. One 50 mg capsule of Ubiquinol per day is 5x more potent than the two 30mg capsules of CoQ10 (Co10 by Thorne) that I used to recommend.

Ubiquinol

Thorne has since come out with Q-Best, a form of Co-Q-10 that is absorbed 10x as much as the powder form.

Because of it’s role in so many metabolic pathways, CoQ10 has been one of the top 5 products that I have sold.

For the month of February, COQ10 supplements are 20% off.

SOPA and PIPA Blackout

I decided to take part in the SOPA and PIPA blackout today. I am against these bills because it will limit access to information on the internet. Unfortunately, our Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is a co-sponser of the bill. Please learn more about the dangers of this bill and contact Sherrod Brown at 202-224-2315, and Senator Rob Portman at 202-224-3353. You can find your local represenatative by putting in your zip code in the upper right hand corner of this page (the form in the center of the page doesn’t seem to be working right now).

From Wikipedia:

Why is the blackout happening?

Wikipedians have chosen to black out the English Wikipedia for the first time ever, because we are concerned that SOPA and PIPA will severely inhibit people’s access to online information. This is not a problem that will solely affect people in the United States: it will affect everyone around the world.

Why? SOPA and PIPA are badly drafted legislation that won’t be effective at their stated goal (to stop copyright infringement), and will cause serious damage to the free and open Internet. They put the burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small sites won’t have sufficient resources to defend themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn’t being infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won’t show up in major search engines. And, SOPA and PIPA build a framework for future restrictions and suppression.

From Google:

More about SOPA and PIPA

Members of Congress are trying to do the right thing by going after pirates and counterfeiters but SOPA and PIPA are the wrong way to do it.

1. SOPA and PIPA would censor the Web

The U.S. government could order the blocking of sites using methods similar to those employed by China. Among other things, search engines could be forced to delete entire websites from their search results. That’s why 41 human rights organizations and 110 prominent law professors have expressed grave concerns about the bills.

2. SOPA and PIPA would be job-killers because they would create a new era of uncertainty for American business

Law-abiding U.S. internet companies would have to monitor everything users link to or upload or face the risk of time-consuming litigation. That’s why AOL, EBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo and Zynga wrote a letter to Congress saying these bills “pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation.” It’s also why 55 of America’s most successful venture capitalists expressed concern that PIPA “would stifle investment in Internet services, throttle innovation, and hurt American competitiveness”. More than 204 entrepreneurs told Congress that PIPA and SOPA would “hurt economic growth and chill innovation”.

3. SOPA and PIPA wouldn’t stop piracy

To make matters worse, SOPA and PIPA won’t even work. The censorship regulations written into these bills won’t shut down pirate sites. These sites will just change their addresses and continue their criminal activities, while law-abiding companies will suffer high penalties for breaches they can’t possibly control.

There are effective ways to combat foreign “rogue” websites dedicated to copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting, while preserving the innovation and dynamism that have made the Internet such an important driver of American economic growth and job creation. Congress should consider alternatives like the OPEN Act, which takes targeted and focused steps to cut off the money supply from foreign pirate sites without making US companies censor the Web.
